South Africa's top mountain biker confirms his pioneering spirit

Kevin Evans

Kevin Evans (MTN Energade), South Africa's most prolific winner of mountain bike races, and the country's favourite mountain biking son, has confirmed the participation of his team in the 2010 race. The MTN Energade team has unparalleled results in local racing, and their participation should add even more spice to the already top field, consisting of among others ex world marathon champion, Christoph Sauser.

Kevin, reigning SA marathon mountain bike champion, is currently in a build-up phase towards the world marathon championships in August of this year, so he should be in absolute top form come the DCM Cape Pioneer Trek. Evans, a native from Plettenberg Bay, needs no introduction to the challenging routes Katot Meyer, infamous DCM Cape Pioneer Trek route designer, has on the plate for this year – after all this has been his training and racing ground over the years.

We wish Kevin and his team the best for their exploits leading up to the World championships in Germany.

First Ascent joins the Trek

First Ascent

First Ascent, South Africa's leading supplier of technical clothing to the sport and outdoor industry, has confirmed a 3 year sponsorship of Dryland Event Management events. Pioneers in their own right, with technical innovations in the sporting codes of trail running, mountaineering, cycling, as well as general outdoor activities, will be the official apparel partner to the DCM Cape Pioneer Trek.

“We are very proud to announce this partnership, and know that their involvement will add immense value to the riders' experience during the race” says Dryland operations chief, Bernard Le Roux. First Ascent marketing executive, Ryan O'Mahoney confirms this and also states that “it is fantastic to be involved with this iconic South African event that epitomizes the pioneering spirit of First Ascent”.

Scooters pizza, who can forget their 2009 impact…

Scooters Pizza

Who can forget the delicious pizzas and stunning girls that Scooters Pizza delivered at the finish in George after stage 5 in 2009. Carlo Gonzaga, co-founder of Scooters, was a 2009 finisher will be on the start line once again in 2010.

The guys at Scooters Pizza took such pleasure seeing the delight on the faces of well-fed mountain bikers, that they just had to be involved again this year. Riaan van den Berg, Scooters Pizza brand manager said that it was just plain 'lekker' to be involved with such a grateful bunch of athletes, that he wouldn't miss it for the world. He says that they will be surprising riders even more this year (although he admitted that beating those girls from last year would be tough) and reminded us that pizza was in fact a great recovery food, loaded with carbs and proteins; goes great with your recovery drink, and/or beer, for the less serious rider.

Scooters are no strangers to this kind of stuff - Gonzaga, a pioneer in the mold of Katot, has shown his pioneering spirit before by delivering Scooters pizzas to the Springbok rugby team during their 2008 World cup campaign in France – all of this by motorbike through Africa and on top of all, the pizza was fresh!!!

So, expect the same service from SA's leading pizza outlet.

DCM Cape Pioneer on Supersport

It was very hard to make Katot reveal his 2010 route, but the Bigshot Media crew probably bribed him and he is agreed to reveal some secrets on the MiWay MTB show on Supersport on July 19th at 20:30

Please make sure you do not miss this!

…and housekeeping

There are always the things that need to be done to ensure the smooth running of the system.

Find a partner

We have had numerous requests from riders looking for riding partners, so once again we will liaise in the efforts to get you riding. Anyone looking for a partner, please e-mail yolandi@dryland.co.za - she will put things together.

Entries are filling up quickly

We urge riders to get their entries in, places are filling up fast and you only have until 31 July to enter at the current entry fee – from then to September 30th the fee will be R16 000, which is also the date that entries close. Remember clothing sizes can only be guaranteed for those who have entered and paid by end July. For those who have already entered, payment is also due now. Entrants not fully paid up will be removed from the entry list.

Upgrades

Those of you in need of some extra pampering will enjoy the luxurious treatment that the platinum package offers – accommodation in hotels and guest houses, your own personal sports masseuse and a dedicated vehicle and host are among the benefits. This is optional to the standard package and can be ordered through the rider zone.

Medical info

There are still some participants that have not yet supplied their medical questionnaire to the medical team, and failure to do so will result in you not being allowed to start.

Bike service

JP, from Cycle Wrench works, has asked us to remind you that the maintenance plans are almost sold out, so please go to the rider zone and purchase this necessity.

The evening after…

Those of you who want to join the riders at their finisher's function can do so by purchasing additional tickets through the rider zone. Please do so as soon as possible as places are limited and are selling quickly.

We would also like to wish all our overseas competitors good luck with their participation in the Salzkammergut Trophy in Austria on 17 July.

You can now also follow the DCM Cape Pioneer Trek team on Facebook and Twitter.

We're in the middle of winter, so those training rides will take extra willpower – stick to your training programme and the results will be reaped.

Till next time - The Dryland Team
